The story is pretty simple and starts with Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) finding himself stranded on a mushroom planet. Settling in for the long haul, he pauses when a portal opens to reveal Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), a crazed red echidna with a serious chip on his shoulder.
Knuckles is desperate to find Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and make him pay for the murder of his people, something that ties in with Longclaw and the battle we saw at the beginning of the original movie.
To stop Sonic, Knuckles intends to use the Master Emerald, the largest and most powerful emerald that can grant its owner unimaginable power. Sonic finds himself against the ropes as Knuckles and Eggman work together. That is, until Tails (voiced by Collen O'Shanussy) jumps in and helps his idol stop this threat and save the day.
Where is Master Emerald?
When Knuckles first mentions the Master Emerald, Robotnik immediately jumps to his feet, sensing an opportunity to use it for his own diabolical means. After the couple agreed to get together, they started looking for her.
Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails set off to find a compass that will lead them to Master Emerald. This takes them to the remote corners of Siberia, where they dance quite colorfully with the locals.
After Sonic and Tails retrieve the compass, a great snowboarding chase ensues as Knuckles is desperate to stop Sonic no matter what.
Unfortunately, Eggman appears and knocks Tails out. This allows him to pick up the compass and get one step closer to "ultimate power". Before Knuckles leaves with Robotnik, he begins to question his rivalry with Sonic and what he knows about the blue hedgehog, as his rivals give up chasing him and instead focus on making sure Tails is okay.
As they leave, an avalanche occurs, bringing Sonic and the now unconscious Tails dangerously close. Thankfully, the couple manages to completely crash Randall and Rachel's wedding in Hawaii because Tom uses the ring to transport them there.
Who is Randall? What happens at a wedding?
One of the film's less interesting subplots—Randall and Rachel's wedding—actually turns out to be a big fake. Codenamed "Operation Catfish," Randall is part of a task force known as GUN, created to monitor extraterrestrial activity. The pair landed on their right lap with Sonic and Tails before them.
Our heroes are unfortunately caught, leaving it up to Maddie and Rachel to save the day and get them out of their predicament. Randall realizes how strong and confident Rachel is and falls in love with her all over again. To prove it, he jumps in the way of the taser, saving his bride from being electrocuted.
Does Robotnik use the Master Emerald?
Back to the action that matters and Robotnik sets off with Knuckles and uses a compass to light the way for the Master Emerald. It takes place on a strange island temple rising out of the ocean.
Complete with Indiana Jones-style traps and a large maze, Knuckles and Robotnik reach the center of this maze and find the emerald. However, Sonic follows them and soon catches up as they take to the field on camera.
Robotnik betrays Knuckles by using the Chaos power of the Emerald for himself. The temple begins to collapse and fill with water, as Sonic and Knuckles head towards their destruction.
With that, Robotnik returns to Agent Dash, and together they create a giant Egg Crush robot ready to help take over the world.
Does Knuckles survive? How does Sonic save the day?
Knuckles finds himself in a sunken temple, crushed under the weight of a large stone pillar. As the water fills the chamber, he appears close to passing out. After a few nice nods to the Sonic games, Sonic goes under the water and helps Knuckles lift the pillar from him.
The echidna swims away, but Sonic can't use his underwater spin powers or jump so high - he looks close to passing out. Fortunately, Knuckles returns and reverses the favor, saving the blue hedgehog from his watery fate.
Realizing that their histories are actually very similar and that they have both been through a lot, Knuckles begins to realize that revenge and hatred are not always enough to overcome past traumas. Seeing Sonic and his carefree attitude is enough to make him change his tune and team up with him to fight Robotnik.
So Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles work together to stop Robotnik, while Tom and Maddie ride up to the Egg Crusher robot - literally - along for the ride.
How to stop Robotnik? Does Robotnik die at the end?
While Sonic distracts Robotnik, doing well to deflect his attacks and distract Eggman, Knuckles and Tails hide the robot's exterior and enter its core.
Hitting Robotnik with a well-placed punch, Sonic becomes a Super Saiyan by eating the emeralds, causing the emeralds to fall. Well, the hedgehog version anyway. He becomes Super Sonic.
With glowing yellow fur and incredible strength, he destroys the giant robot and defeats Robotnik, causing him to fall from the Egg Crusher and perish.
But is Robotnik really dead? Fans of the Sonic games will say no, but considering Jim Carrey has said he doesn't want to act anymore and will be taking a break, we can see his character completely destroyed.
Meanwhile and after Robotnik stops, Tom is happy that Sonic now has his own team, something that worries him about the movie. Sonic also calls Tom to his father, another callback to the early moments of the film when the pair go fishing together at the lake, when Tom instills words of wisdom to the hedgehog.
It's an all-around happy ending, and Knuckles seems to be burying the hatchet along with Sonic.
Is there a post-credits sequence?
Yes! Don't go anywhere when the end credits roll, because you'll definitely want to stay for this one. GUN searches the rubble for Robotnik's body, but finds something far more dangerous.
One of the agents informs the commander that he has been going through Robotnik's archives and found something called "Project Shadow" from 50 years ago.
As we descend into the underground lair, we see the iconic black-and-red hedgehog in stasis in the facility.
Who is Shadow the Hedgehog?
Fans of the games will remember that Shadow the Hedgehog appeared during the 2001 video game Sonic Adventure 2. The Shadow is a science experiment gone wrong, but described as "The Highest Life Form".
The lore surrounding the Shadow now describes him as an immortal being created by Robotnik's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. The creature was genetically engineered as part of an experiment to cure her granddaughter Maria of a deadly disease.
Shadow and Maria formed a strong bond until the government deemed her a threat. After GUN kills Maria, the shadow is placed in suspended animation. Maria's death shook the Shadow, who vowed to keep his promise to protect the world from danger. In the games, Eggman learns about Shadow and revives him in a new diabolical plan to defeat Sonic, framing Sonic for GUN's misdeeds.
Whether or not Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will actually follow this backstory is up for debate, but it certainly makes for a very interesting turn of events!
